iRice

A Tahoe desktop for Hyprland.

Liquid Glass, a dynamic island, Spotlight and Control Center, on Arch Linux. Try it on its own console, next to the desktop you have.

bash <(curl -fsSL https://irice.monishbl.in/get)

Arch Linux or Arch-based (CachyOS, EndeavourOS). It asks before installing any packages.

What you get

A shell built from scratch in Quickshell, styled after macOS Tahoe and tuned for everyday laptops.

Liquid Glass

Real refraction drawn by the compositor. Glass, Frost and Solid materials, or your own mix, with clear text over anything.

Dynamic island

Music, timers, calls, devices and notifications as live activities in the menu bar.

Spotlight and Control Center

Apps, files, maths, conversions and actions in one search. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, sound and focus in one panel.

Light on the battery

Cool-down mode lightens the glass and slows the refresh rate when the laptop runs hot.

Your shortcuts, kept

Every shortcut and gesture is editable, and updates never change yours without asking.

Leaves your desktop alone

It runs from its own folder on its own console. Your ~/.config and usual session stay untouched.

Install

Two minutes plus package downloads.

  1. Get iRice. In a terminal on your usual desktop:
    bash <(curl -fsSL https://irice.monishbl.in/get)
It goes into ~/iRice; give a folder to put it elsewhere. Add --with-settings to start from the shared look.
  2. Switch to a free console. Press Ctrl Alt F3 and log in.
  3. Start it.
    cd ~/iRice && ./demo.sh --check && ./dev.sh tty
The check tells you what's missing, if anything.
  4. Leave when you like. Super Shift Esc ends it; Ctrl Alt F1 or F2 takes you back.

Updates

iRice checks for updates every few hours and tells you when one is ready.

Open Settings → Software Update to see what's new. If the update touches something you've made your own, it asks first, and installs nothing until you've decided each one:

Settings with new defaults
Keep what you have, or take the new default.
Your glass material
When Glass or Frost looks different in the update: keep your look (saved as Custom) or take the new one.
Shortcut clashes
When a new shortcut uses keys you've given to something else: keep yours, or take the new one.
Files you edited
Keep both sets of changes when they fit together, or only yours, or only the update's.

Your settings and shortcuts are backed up before anything changes. Running the install command again also updates a copy that has no edits of its own.

Share a look

The shared settings: glass, colours, menu bar, dock and the rest. No personal data.

Download irice-config.tar.gz, unpack it, then apply it to your iRice folder:

./import.sh --repo ~/iRice

Your current settings are backed up first, and your desktop widgets stay as they are.

If something's off

The glass looks flat or frosted, not refractive
The glass plugin didn't build for your Hyprland. Run ~/iRice/tools/setup-tty.sh again after a Hyprland update.
Animations feel choppy on a laptop
Check your display isn't stuck at a low refresh rate: Cool-down lowers it while the laptop is hot, and gives it back after.
The screen froze
From another console (Ctrl Alt F4): cd ~/iRice && ./dev.sh tty-stop.
Removing it
Delete the ~/iRice folder. Nothing else was changed.
